2 Free and Easy Eco-Friendly Swaps

Everyone has heard by now swap plastic for reusable canvas bags to the store and a reusable water bottle for bottle water, so I wanted to offer two high impact, free eco swaps that you may not know about. I picked these because of their ability to continuously lower your carbon footprint but only require a small upfront investment of time to make the switch (I'm talking 15 minutes).

Swap #1: Change your search engine.

Meet Ecosia, a search engine that uses at least 80% of ad revenue to plant trees around the world, increasing CO2 absoprtion. This Certified B Corp based in Berlin was founded in 2009.

Pros:

For approximately every 45 searches, Ecosia plants a tree with revenue from ads generated from your searches.Through Ecosia, your searches are CO2-neutral (they neutralize all carbon emissions related to your searches)Unlike other search engines we know (mmhmm), Ecosia doesn't sell your data to advertisers and does not use third party trackers. So that "someone is watching you" feeling can go away.

Cons:

Occasionally, I have to return to Google to search for something when Ecosia is not giving me the result I'm looking for.

To make using Ecosia easy and second nature, just install their extension/ add-on on your browser and all your searches will automatically be made through their engine. Here are the links to the extension for Chrome, Firefox, and Safari.

Swap # 2: Switch to using clean energy.

Not everyone has the opportunity to select clean energy from their local electric company. However, there are still ways to "use clean energy" by signing up with a clean energy provider that ensures your electricity usage supports renewable energy sources.

I know there are a few clean energy options out there, but I have been using the company Arcadia Power for a few years and it has been seamless since I first enrolled. They are not available in all U.S. areas, but you can check here if they serve you.

When you sign up, Arcadia will connect with your electricity provider and from then on, you will only pay you bill through Arcadia, who will in turn pay your electric company every month (you can see my dashboard below).

When you sign up, you can select the amount of your power bill you want "supplied" by clean energy each month. Going 50% clean costs you NOTHING EXTRA over your current bill! Going 100% clean is slightly more, but I think it is definitely worth it.

You can use my referral code for up to a $25 dollar credit after signing up.

Take 5 minutes and make these easy, free switches! I would love to hear about your experience if you do. Please share in the comments below.
